Sam Wells - another top ten result! - 20/2/12

"We've made it to Europe and have battled the daytime winds in Kreischberg, Austria!

Women's qualifications were cancelled due to the extremely windy morning conditions- finals were run in the evening.

I competed a Lay Full- a single twisting double summersault and scored my best yet- 80.33 points which put me in 8th place!

We've spent a few days exploring Vienna and head to Minsk in the morning for the next World Cup event on Saturday."

Since I last reported to the club on my training movements and competition results, my training and travel schedule has been quite jam-packed!

After arriving home from summer training in Utah, I had a little time to unwind at home before heading down to Canberra and Jindabyne for a pre-winter strength and fitness camp. The camp, in its second year of being held ran really smoothly and showed much improvement in my strength and fitness over the past year.  I then had a further couple of weeks at home in which I maintained my daily strength and fitness routine in the gym before heading off for the Northern winter season.

I set off from Sydney bound for Ruka, Finland. After 4 flights and over 52 hours travel my team arrived with our entire training luggage to a very dismal looking site! The bare knoll was followed by a landing hill, which had tufts of grass and rocks protruding from the fine blanket of snow that covered the Lapland. There most certainly was not enough snow to build full-blown aerials site, let alone cover enough for a safe landing area. With other ski disciplines’ competition schedules taking priority for snow making, our team reassessed our timeline and made the decision to relocate to Apex, Canada where there was an aerial site up and running with the Canadian ‘Air Force’ training.

Once we’d settled into our new location, training on snow for 2011 was in full swing. My jumps progressed nicely over the camp from singles on to the double, continuing on with two new tricks I had learnt in the summer! The transition back to snow from water was quite smooth- small adjustments to rotation and aerial awareness I found easy to make and my landing percentage proved better than I had anticipated!

Seeing as we had relocated to Apex I missed out on the early season Europa Cup regional competition practice, however I am really excited with the direction of my training so far and the upcoming FIS World Cup Competition in Mt Gabriel on January the 9th. After a short break over the festive season, training will resume again in North America- in Lake Placid or Val Saint-Come in preparation for the start of the FIS World Cup.

  Happy days!
